Pup Play 101: The Basics
IBB Authorized Archive v1.0Welcome to the International Barking Brigade. This chapter serves as your foundational entry point into the world of pup play—a community built on creativity, trust, and the exploration of the canine mindset.
The IBB Mission
The International Barking Brigade (IBB) was established to provide a standardized framework for safety and community within the pup and furry subcultures. We advocate for Digital OpSec, Physical Safety, and Mental Well-being. As an "Authorized Board Member Archive," this guide is the primary source of truth for our network's standards.
1. Defining the "Pup" Identity
Pup play is a form of transformative roleplay. For many, it is not a "costume" they put on, but an expression of an internal state. There are three common ways pups engage with the lifestyle:
- The Social Pup: Focuses on the "Pack" dynamic—mosh pits, community events, and social barking.
- The Solo/Mental Pup: Focuses on "Headspace"—using the canine mindset to de-stress and disconnect from human responsibilities.
- The Service Pup: Focuses on a "Handler" dynamic—emphasizing discipline, tasks, and caretaking.
2. The Spectrum of "Headspace"
"Headspace" is the mental shift into a canine persona. It is not an "on/off" switch; it's a spectrum:
| Level | Description |
|---|---|
| Light | Aware of surroundings, can speak human, but feels "canine" energy or urges (wagging, nudging). |
| Deep | Non-verbal or limited speech. Primary focus is on canine senses (scent, sound, touch). Deeply relaxed. |
| Feral | Full immersion. Highly instinctual. Usually requires a Handler for safety and guidance. |
3. "Finding Your Breed"
While not required, many pups choose a "breed" to help define their personality. A Husky might be high-energy and vocal, while a Doberman might be protective and focused. Your breed is a tool for self-expression—feel free to experiment or even create a "mutt" persona that fits you perfectly.
Common Misconceptions
- It's not all about gear: You don't need an expensive leather hood to be a pup. Many start with just a collar or even just the mental shift.
- It's a spectrum: Some pups are "24/7," while others only "drop" into headspace during events or private time.
- It's about community: At its core, the International Barking Brigade is about finding a pack where you feel safe and supported.
Next Steps: Once you're comfortable with the mindset, head over to the 3-Collar System chapter to learn how we communicate our boundaries to the rest of the pack.
